Every now and then a name comes up on the local live music calendar that just stands out for being a name that you’re familiar with but have never seen. Iron & Wine’s performance for the sold out crowd at Saturn in Tuesday night was so good that it made me wonder why it took so long for them to return to Birmingham, Alabama. The amount of fun was evenly shared between the ones on the stage and the ones in front of. Supported that night by Lydia Loveless and her band, the lucky crowd was in for a night of really good music.

Lydia Loveless took the stage on their last stop with Iron and Wine around 8:00 and played a killer opening set. With plenty of quality material she had the place moving early and often. The set featured a few songs off her new album that she released last year on Bloodshot Records called Real. The native of Columbus, Ohio has a beautiful voice that really blends well with the melodies. She will be in the Atlanta area at the Star Bar in mid September so don’t miss your chance to see her live.

PHOTOS: Iron & Wine with Lydia Loveless @ Saturn - Birmingham - 8.29.17After an anxious wait while the stage was being set for Iron & Wine, the man Sam Beam and his very talented band took the stage. They did not waste much time and got right into with their first song “The Trapeze Swinger” off their 2009 album Around the Well. Before they began their second song, Beam mentioned that he has been waiting a long time to play it for US. It being “About a Bruise” off their just released new album Beast Epic (Sub Pop) which mentions the state of Alabama in the lyrics and received a healthy response afterwards.

That portion of the set began with the most polite and timely song request for “The Devil Never Sleeps” and Beam kindly accepted with a warning that “it had been a while”. When the time came where he forgot some lines, he just made some up and started to question the meaning of some of the words by updated them with more current lyrics. It was really the highlight of my night because it was just so random, funny and entertaining. Check out their new album and try to catch them coming through your town because it might not happen again for a while.
