Melbourne, Australia-based Amyl and The Sniffers’ meteoric rise continued as they returned to Atlanta, this time at The Eastern, the band’s biggest venue yet in our city as they continue to return to Atlanta multiple times over the last few years.
This was a night about good ole fashioned punk rock; specifically female fronted punk bands ready to rock the socks off of the Atlanta crowd; a night before Halloween no-less that brought some costumes out both on the stage and in the crowd.
First up was Atlanta based punks Ladrones. With Jose Rivera on guitar and frontwoman Valeria Sanchez from San Juan, Puerto Rico, the band goes hard with a fiery throwback punk that gives ode to the classic 70’s/80’s punk bands and mixes both English and Spanish lyrics. These folks rip.
Next was really who’s next in the upcoming punk rock spheres, and that may just be Austin, TX based Die Spitz. The all-female quartet bring the energy start to finish with a set full of grungy punk rock. The young band released their debut album, Teeth, earlier this year, and Die Spitz has grown out of the music mecca that is Austin with a buzz extending nationally, and their live set certainly backs that up. Non-stop!
Amyl and The Sniffers haven’t released a new album since 2021, yet the US and the world keeps wanting them to come back for more. That is definitely the case here in Atlanta. Playing the Criminal Records Stage at Shaky Knees last year, then returning to Atlanta again in September of 2022 for a sold out show at Variety Playhouse, the Aussie punks were back in Atlanta once again. This show was another step up in stage size and capacity. Yet, no matter the stage, it always feels like an old school house show where punk was born.
With NWA professional wrestler Thrillbilly Silas Mason there to help introduce the band and dance with frontwoman Amy Taylor, it was chaos from the start, in the middle, to the end, and everything in between as expected at an Amyl and The Sniffers show. Silas Mason even returned at the end of the set, picked up and swung around Taylor all over the stage, clearly really wanting to toss her into the crowd. Instead he jumped his huge, 250 lb/maybe 300 lbs self across the barricade into the arms of the hyped up crowd up front in the pit. Not sure how Thrillbilly didn’t kill anyone, or at minimum get dropped, so well done Atlanta, you are STRONG. Again, though, should we expect any different at an Amyl show? Amyl and The Sniffers keep coming back to Atlanta, and we keep showing up for one of the best shows across the globe. This is punk rock.
