Ariel Pink (born Ariel Marcus Rosenberg) is a Los Angeles-based one-man band. He started out as a visual artist before becoming a recording artist in the late ‘90s, and has been honing in on his euphoric-pop sound since. In 2003, his lo-fi experimental music caught the attention of Animal Collective’s Paw Tracks label, earning his home recordings a small and devoted fan base through a series of limited edition reissues. As he gained popularity, Pink’s influence grew. His solo efforts evolved into a four-piece; he signed with landmark indie label 4AD late in 2009, and his resulting first single, “Round and Round,” was named the #1 Record of 2010 by Pitchfork. In 2014, he returned to his solo moniker and released Pom Pom.
In the three years since Pom Pom, Pink shared his first solo jam (via Mexican Summer) “Another Weekend” earlier this month online. The track, backed with “Ode To The Goat (Thank You)”, will be available as a 7” single on August 18. The track is also the first single from his eleventh studio album, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, due out September 15, his first full length on Mexican Summer.
All in the span of 4-minutes, “Another Weekend” speaks in morse volumes. It’s whispering sweetly one second and causing uneasy feelings the next – “though I fail to ignore this resignation, you’re standing there.” It’s a calming sound for Pink, unlike his very colorful past works, showing signs of introspection. He has set a serene but complicated scene for the next chapter, a page turner that art-rock fans will have to patiently await.
