Austin, Texas based trio Being Dead released their killer debut album, When Horses Would Run, on July 14th via Bayonet Records. On Thursday night they made their way to Atlanta to play 529 in East Atlanta Village to an excited crowd.
Kicking off the evening was Atlanta-based The Sporrs, who got the crowd going early with their punk/garage rock sound full of energy. Definitely a band to check out here locally.
Up next on the evening were Athens/Atlanta-based dance punks Nihilist Cheerleader. This is just one of those bands that know how to put on a great show. Riot Grrrl rock to the fullest with a front woman Flynne Collins who never stops. Nihilist Cheerleader are currently working on their highly anticipated sophomore album.
Being Dead came up last to a hyped up crowd ready to dance. And the band was ready to provide. The debut album from best friends Falcon B*tch, Gumball, and Ricky Moto, shines with a mix of surf rock, freak pop, and frantic punk, and maybe even a little 60’s psychedelic folk mixed in. Modern comparisons could land somewhere between Dehd and Snooper, a couple of buzz bands on their own.
Being Dead clearly are best friends. And it’s that energy and love for each, and quite frankly, the fun they have together that translates easily to the audience. With Falcon B*tch and Gumball switching between guitar and drums throughout the set, there is a playful energy between the two as Ricky Moto sways on the bass. But really it’s the way their voices intertwine creating a wall of sound that feels so much bigger than just a three piece. Really a great set from Being Dead, and if they aren’t on your radar yet, you are missing out on one of the year’s best albums. And it’s only their debut.
