Father John Misty rolled through Atlanta on Friday night playing The Eastern behind his fifth album, Chloë and The Next 20th Century, released earlier this year via Sub Pop Records.
Atlanta was the second to last stop on this US tour, before hitting Central and South America for a few festivals in November, with their sites set on Europe in 2023. By this point of the tour, the 9 piece band had clearly hit their stride, starting off the Atlanta set strong with “I Love You, Honeybear”, “Mr. Tillman”, and “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings”.
Over the 23 song set, the packed out crowd sang and danced alongside Josh Tillman and his talented band, which of course, included some good banter from Mr. Tillman himself. During “When You’re Smiling and Astride Me”, a piece of confetti fell which was leftover from the Carly Rae Jepsen show the night before leading Tillman to comment in the middle of the song in his FJM way “A single confetti falls, you have no idea what this cost”. And then there was that point in the show when he called out some audience members for taking LSD, then acknowledging how much he probably just interrupted their trip by calling them out in the middle of the show. You know classic Father John Misty stuff, connecting with his audience in ways that only he can.
There was a ton of favorites throughout the set from Father John Misty’s first four albums, but their plenty of the new album that fit in nicely throughout the career spanning set. The crooning was strong on songs like “Chole”, “Goodbye Mr. Blue”, “Funny Girl”, “Q4”, and “Buddy’s Rendezvous”. And that horn section was from the heavens.
Once again, Father John Misty put on a show that won’t soon be forgotten: from the band, the banter, the crooning, the dancing, songs that connect, songs that are funny, cynical, and spot on to our modern day lives and the world we live in, this is pretty much what I’d call a perfect show. And at the perfect venue. The Eastern is outstanding, and when there is great view points and sound wherever you are in the venue, it only adds to the magic. Once again, this show is another prime example of (sort of, not really) post pandemic life, and why we all love and need live music.
Opening up the show was a nice set from FJM’s labelmate Suki Waterhouse. The model, actress, and singer released her debut album I Can’t Let Go in May via Sub Pop and has already released new singles with a new EP set to release on November 4th. We actually got to catch Suki at Shaky Knees 2021, and it was good to see her again in Atlanta. With comparisons that range from Lana Del Ray to Joni Mitchell, its clear she’s more than just another actress turned singer. The vibes were good on Suki Waterhouse‘s opening set. The bodies were swaying for this one.
