Fruit Bats stopped through Atlanta on Saturday night at Variety Playhouse behind his just released 10th album, A River Running to Your Heart, out now via Merge Records.
Opening up the show was none other than the lovely Esther Rose who also just released her new album Safe to Run on April 21st via New West Records. It was a wonderful set from Esther and the band that included highlights from her new album, her fourth LP, like “Chet Baker” and “Spider”. Esther Rose is actually back in Atlanta this week at Eddie’s Attic on May 4th, which sounds like a perfect evening in the listening room of Eddie’s.
Fruit Bats, aka Eric D. Johnson by now is known as one of the best songwriters and musicians around, whether it with Fruit Bats, his film scores, being a side man in plenty of other bands like The Shins, or his latest new venture, the super group Bonny Light Horseman with with Josh Kaufman and Anais Mitchel. But with Fruit Bats and the talented players in the band alongside Eric, there is plenty of great songs to choose from, and he played plenty in Atlanta. A few highlights included “The Bottom of It” off 2019’s Gold Past Life and the closer “Humbug Mountain Song” off of 2016’s Absolute Loser. There was so many really, and of course plenty of highlights from the new album A River Running to Your Heart like “It All Comes Back”, “Rushin’ River Valley” and “Waking Up in Los Angeles”. It was a stellar night all at Variety Playhouse from one of generations greatest folk rockers.
