Mo Lowda & the Humble is a genre-defying trio based out of the suburbs of Philadelphia. From alternative rock to progressive rock, this band is known for their broadminded lyrics and energetic live performances. It’s members consist of lead singer and guitarist Jordan Caiola, drummer Shane Woods and bassist Jeff Lucci. Their seamless mix of power songwriting, soulful vocals, and dynamic rhythm creates their unique and arduous sound that is mesmerizing audiences across the United States.
Late last year, we got to see Mo Lowda rock out the stage at Vinyl in Atlanta, Georgia on their Creatures tour behind their latest album (March 13, 2018). Before the show we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview this eclectic trio. The band returns to Atlanta next weekend to perform at the 15th annual Sweetwater 420 Fest in Centennial Park. Catch Mo Lowda & the Humble on Saturday, 4/20 on the Lyrics & Laughter Stage at 1:00pm, purchase your tickets here. Check out Tenley Bailey‘s chat with the band for more on Mo Lowda & the Humble:
OE: How has the “Creatures” tour been so far?
Jeff: “It’s been really good. It’s actually almost over. We have this show, Charleston, and then we get to head home to spend Thanksgiving at home.”
Jordan: “Tour has been fun. Don’t get me wrong, some nights are better than others though. There’s either a pretty big crowd or a really small one. There’s always that Monday or Tuesday night when we play for maybe five people. Overall, its been a great experience just to be able to play our music for anyone.”
OE: What has been your favorite place on tour so far?
All three responded Austin, Texas without hesitation
Shane: “Austin was the coolest place we’ve been. There’s so much to do there. There is a lot of music and art. The crowd was unique.”
OE: What is the hardest part of being on tour?
Shane: “Not getting enough sleep. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good time, but we’re always tired.”
Jeff: “Being in the van all the time.”
Jordan: “Yea it gives you a lot of time to just sit and think.”
Shane: “I also had a friend ask me recently what we do to avoid blood clots from sitting still all the time. I honestly never thought about that, so I guess you could add that to the list as well.”
Jordan: “We have been listening to Bloc Party on repeat a lot recently, so that makes the van a little more enjoyable.”
OE: What are some of your biggest influencers?
Shane: “Definitely psychedelic rock like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Also, music from the 60s and 70s.”
Jordan: “Also bands like My Morning Jacket and Local Natives.”
OE: What are some things that influence the writing of lyrics and music?
Jordan: “Everything in life. Family, friends, past relationships, current relationships, or lack thereof.”
Jeff: “Anything that is relevant in our lives at the time.”
OE: Has this always been a passion? How did you get into music?
Jordan: “I don’t think there was a time I ever “got into music.” It has always just been there.”
Shane: “Kind of like an addiction. Except it’s an addiction to music.”
What is the story behind “Card Shark”? Is it actually about gambling or is there an underlying meaning?
Jordan: “It actually is about gambling and how it can consume a person. I had this friend whose father was addicted to gambling and it destroyed her family. It’s basically a look into the life of someone who has that problem. Though I haven’t been in that position myself, you have to imagine yourself in that particular situation.”
OE: Do you have any advice for up and coming bands?
Jordan: “Go to school and get a degree before you commit your life to this.”
Jeff: “Oh for sure. I actually had a 9 to 5 job before I was even in the band. I did not think this was going to be my life, but now it is. You need to have something to fall back on incase it doesn’t work out.”
