Japandroids returned to Atlanta with two shows in as many days. After their powerful performance at Shaky Knees Festival, the Canadian rock duo stopped by The Masquerade for a more intimate late night show filled with their unstoppable energy, this time with Los Angeles garage-rockers, L.A. Witch, as the opening act.
There was a lot of anticipation for this post-festival late night show at The Masquerade. Japandroids and L.A. Witch may have been listed in smaller font in the Shaky Knees posters, but their performances were some of the highlights of the festival and caught the attention of many attendees.
To start off the show, L.A. Witch took over the Masquerade’s Hell stage for a round of dark and moody rock tunes. Sade Sanchez’ voice reminded the audience of Throwing Muses’ Kristin Hersh in her prime, while her guitar gave an intense psychedelic rock vibe.
Going through several songs from their 2017 acclaimed self-titled debut album, the band received a very warm welcome from their Atlanta fans as the crowd screamed their names after every break.
It didn’t take long after Japandroids took the stage for the crowd to start moshing. A massive pit took over most of the ground level within three notes of their newest hit “Near To The Wild Heart Of Life”.
The intensity of this band is something every rock fan must witness. Vocalist Brian King strummed his guitar with fury and sang every word like it was his last breath, while David Prowse builds on to the energy with his powerful drumming.
The set was a great balance of songs from their newest album Near To The Wild Heart Of Life and their first two, Post-Nothing and Celebration Rock. The crowd seemed to know the lyrics to every song played and chanted along with the band while dancing and crowd surfing.
The late night show came to an end with “The House That Heaven Built”, a rock anthem that will leave you singing “oh oh oh oh oh oh ohhh” hours after it’s over. Japandroids surely left a mark in Atlanta in their latest stop.
