British pop-singer Lily Allen wore her heart on her sleeve and treated the sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg crowd to an intimate showcase of songs off of her soon-to-be-released fourth album, No Shame (June 8th via Warner Bros.).
In a word, Lily Allen is unabashed. On Monday night, she was unafraid to share the most personal details of her life, including her struggle with alcoholism, her recent divorce, and managing a music career with children. During the interludes between songs, she spoke candidly about the context behind her new material: the single “Three” is about her children, “Pushing Up Daisies” is about her current boyfriend, and “My One” is about what led to her divorce. The crowd was in full-support of her lyrical outpour through cheers, claps, and “I love you”’s.
The show was not solemn, however. Lily emerged through the darkness of her new music with jest. She even joked that her anecdotes were diverting into part-comedy show, part-therapy session.
From the archives, she sang the punchy anthem “Knock ‘Em Out.” She also sang “Smile” and “Fuck You” and revealed that the latter was originally written about George W. Bush, but is now rededicated to the current president.
The crowd was quick to chant “Lily” back on stage for an encore. She ended the night with “Trigger Bang,” “The Fear,” and “Not Fair” and even signed several front-row fans’ LPs.
