My Morning Jacket returned to Atlanta for this Fall Tour 2023 with a 2 night stand at the Fox Theatre, providing the perfect setting for MMJ fans to celebrate one of the greatest bands of our generation.
On Friday, the first of two consecutive nights at the Fox, My Morning Jacket celebrated the 20th anniversary of their beloved third album It Still Moves by playing the classic album front to back. Of course though, MMJ played beyond the album’s 12 songs with other songs like “Victory Dance”, “Feel You” and more off of other albums.
Devon Gilfillian kicked off both nights, showing off his soulful rock and indie pop surrounded by a talented band. Gilfillian released his latest album, Love You Anyway, in April of this year via Fantasy Records and certainly earned some new fans on this run with MMJ.
We got to attend Saturday night’s My Morning Jacket show, sadly missing the anniversary show on Friday. And well, Saturday night was something special. This one felt like an all out celebration of all things MMJ with a 21 song career spanning set completely different from Friday’s show. Career spanning except It Still Moves of course, but when you have a discography like MMJ, you didn’t even miss a beat not hearing “One Big Holiday”, “Golden” and more.
Saturday’s show included highlights like “Spring (Among the Living)”, “Only Memories Remain” (with Devon Gilfillian joining them onstage), “I’m Amazed”, “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream, Pt. 2”, “Dondante” and set closer “Evil Urges”. Really there were so many moments, and the band was on fire from start to end having fun together like they were just a few years in as a band. Pure joy for the band and the audience.
It really kicked into gear again during the encore with the final two songs “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream, Pt. 1” and “Wordless Chorus” to end, being particularly magical with every single member of the audience singing along in joy.
After surveying audience members known and met throughout the evening for those who attended both nights, the question was simply which night was better (purely for selfish reasons of wanting to know what I missed Friday). The answer seemed to be that Friday was the best night, but that’s really because of how special the album was and them playing it through. Saturday was the bigger rock performance which was high high energy set and made for a great night too…..
All I know is that there is never a wrong night to My Morning Jacket was live, and if Friday night was really “better” than Saturday night, all I have to say is wow. Saturday really felt like something special, though I’ve probably said that at many a MMJ show. Still though, you couldn’t have asked for a better venue than the Fox Theatre for these special set of shows. Magical. That’s what it was.
