Strap in your earbuds this week, because this last Friday was a big release week. The list is extensive, meaning there is bound to be some new music to find and love this week. Not only long, there are plenty of really amazing albums that you are going to want to hunker down and spend some time with.
There are two obvious choices this week with the release of Sunflower Bean‘s debut album Human Ceremony and DIIV‘s latest Is the Is Are. It’s interesting these two albums are released on the same day, being that Sunflower Bean started really gaining buzz while out on tour with DIIV. Now the friends are releasing their albums together. Sunflower Bean’s debut is a revelation of pop rock able to seamlessly mix styles along many a genre (dream pop, garage rock, grunge, etc.) with girl guy vocals. Read our review of Sunflower Bean’s debut that actually lived up to the buzz here. DIIV’s sophomore album is a 17 song album of guitar bliss. Add in Nap Eyes latest album Thought Rock Fish Scale, which would perk up the ears of Lou Reed fans, and you got three albums that could live on repeat, with new nuances found on each listen. But don’t stop there.
It seems this week was a great week for releases out of Atlanta. Book of Colors highly anticipated self titled debut album is out on Deer Bear Wolf. With as many as 14 different musicians spanning members 0f Little Tybee, Faun and a Pan Flute, Adron & more, the psychedelic folk ensemble led by Andre Paraguassu has created an album that would sound great on my record player, even 50 years from now. Atlanta’s Jack Fowler kicks off with two of his much buzzed about projects exwhy‘s The Feels, and Flower‘s Waste of Life. If you like a slight 90’s nostalgia in your rock, these are two projects you should check out with Flower adding in a little extra grunge. Listen to exwhy’s song “Salt” and you are going to hear one of the best tracks of the year so far. We can’t forget the debut 8 song self titled EP from Waking Astronomer, a group of experimental beats with electronic and jazz instrumentation topped by vocalist Afua Richardson, who sounds like the next R&B star ready to be buzzed about. The group at times can sound vaguely familiar, but then like nothing else out there. This group is ready for the big time. Add in the debut EP of indie pop lush lullabies from Suntrodden, I, and it’s a pretty stellar week in our hometown.
A few more new releases on the list that week that stood out while listening over the weekend include Dr. Dog‘s latest The Psychedelic Swamp, Porches‘ Pool, Escondido‘s Walking With a Stranger, Chris Bathgate‘s Old Factory EP, Francis’ Marathon, and Rayland Baxter‘s SOHO EP. And don’t forget to pick up the Deluxe version of Leon Bridge’s Coming Home which includes a few new songs.
