Atlanta based Omni released their debut album, Deluxe, on Friday via Trouble In Mind Records, one of the most immediate attention grabbing records of the year. Omni is guitarist Frankie Broyles (ex-Deerhunter, Balkans), bassist/vocalist Philip Frobos (ex-Carnivores) and drummer Billy Mitchell (ex-Carnivores).
The cosmic debut finds the post punk band providing funky, danceable lofi pop that gets the motors running, yet showing a culminating restraint just before hitting over drive; only serving to keep it interesting and leaving you wanting more and more. Billy’s rhythmic drumming keeps it all together as Frankie’s striking guitar follows along before providing plenty of twists and turns alongside Philip’s whimsical lyrics. The band channels the age of the late 70’s and early 80’s Television, Devo, and Pylon, a reminder today that all the computerized effects aren’t necessary to create something new and interesting, something of a retro futuricstic feel. Omni is ready to leave a mark on 2016 with their debut album Deluxe.
With Deluxe on repeat all weekend, we caught up with the band and asked them to take over this week’s Monomania playlist, a Spotify playlist of 30 (total) songs rotating in and out, updated weekly for your listening pleasure. What are the songs that are currently stuck on repeat for Omni?
Omni’s List:
Melkbelly – “Eik Mountain”
Like a thunderstorm in the desert, Melkbelly are a terrifyingly beautiful and powerful phenomenon. It’s a backing band of giants surrounding the melodic gale force that is lead singer Miranda Winters. Miranda, along with her beefcake husband Bart Winters, channels everything I love about Neil Young and Sonic Yourth guitar while her brother in law and Bart’s younger – and taller – brother Liam Winters anchors their swirling guitar lines with bass lines that please the metal and dance party loving parts of my brain. Drummer James Wetzel is running 4 minute miles on the drums, ripping parts you would swear need 6 limbs to play. /-Billy Mitchell
All the songs from our label mates from the other side of the ocean deserve to be played on repeat. /-Billy Mitchell
Nots – “Entertain Me”
Long time friends from Memphis, they only keep getting more amazing. This song is a monster kraut punk jam (although it’s hard to say jam cuz it’s so snarling). /-Philip Frobos
WALL – “Cuban Cigars”
Just heard Wall for the first time last week. This track has been stuck in head since. Rocks like Delta 5 meets Le Tigre. I love the dynamics between the backing and lead vocals. /-Philip Frobos
Jessica Pratt – “Greycedes”
I guess this song came out last year but since hearing it I’ve never gotten tired of it. I really like how she changes her voice throughout the song. I like it a lot. /-Frankie Broyles
Art School Jocks – “Nina”
Art School Jocks are an Atlanta band. I’ve been hearing a lot about them but keep missing their shows. So… I was excited to see that they have two songs up on soundcloud. They are both great, this is one of them. /-Frankie Broyles
