Halfway through their North American tour, Coast Modern stopped by Bowery Ballroom in New York City last Thursday night and brought their unseasonably nicknamed tour “Haunted House Party 2018” and pre-opener fan talent show with them.
Just after the venue doors opened and just before the first band, the first three fans to sign up had the opportunity to perform on the Bowery stage. In true high school talent show fashion, the first two karaoke’d over AUX cord plugins and the last sung along to a ukulele.
Alt-rockers Late Night Episode took the stage shortly after and performed with nonstop energy. Lead singer Daniel Lonner and guitarist Eric Sherman performed in the audience not only once, but twice – setting a high-energy tone for the rest of the night.
Three-piece SHAED electrified the room with their neon-doused set. Having yet to release a full-length album, the trio, consisting of vocalist Chelsea Lee and twin brother instrumentalists Max and Spencer Ernst, performed songs off their EP Just Wanna See and singles “Lonesome” and “Too Much.” They also covered R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix),” which prompted an audience-wide sing-along.
Coast Modern’s set was hands-in-the-air danceable start to finish. Indie-pop west coasters Coleman Trapp and Luke Atlas performed back-to-back grooves on a stage decked out with a lava lamp and a yellow gummy bear night light. They played “Guru,” “Hollow Life,” “The Way It Was,” “Animals,” and more from their 18-song self-titled album. They also covered DRAM’s “Cute” and MGMT’s “Electric Feel.” Instead of the usual encore that saves the best songs for last, the duo ended the night with a playful and anthemic cover of Aretha Franklin’s “A Natural Woman,” sung by Atlas.
