Jazz-funk extraordinaires, The New Mastersounds stopped into Terminal West Thursday night. The foursome exemplifies a high level of musical communication with no words or signals outside of their instruments – it’s apparent they’ve been playing together for a long time. Jam band style tunes had the packed crowd on their feet. Two horns players joined in on the final two songs to round out Mastersounds’ jazz core.
Former New York buskers, Moon Hooch opened the show with a tight set to many a dancing fans. I have not seen an opener command this much attention – the crowd was probably 75% to capacity with all members dancing along to the horn, dub step watchamacallit. Newly found fans screamed for an encore. While both sax players take front stage, drummer James Muschler is not to be missed. He ties the group together and delivers undeniable and unexpected beats that always hit the mark. I’ve managed to catch them three times in the last year in the southeast, and it’s clear that their fan base continues to grow.
