The Summer of 2021 has officially arrived! While the pandemic isn’t over, the World is finally opening back up to a sense of almost normalcy this summer. Vaccinations are readily available in the US, gatherings are happening, and full blown big live music events are on the way. Now it feels like the time to return with our yearly summer mix, the Summer of 2021 Spotify playlist: Lazy Pool Dayz.
The Summer 2021 Mix features various indie rock and pop artists, all released within the 2021 calendar year. Starting out to ease you into a sun soaked day is John Andrews and the Yawns’ (former Quilt member) “Easy Going” off his latest album Cookbook. This one feels like a classic summer song from 1970 instead of 2021. From there the playlist features everything from the sensual beats of Men I Trust and The Marias, the psychedelic pop of Crumb, Sugar Candy Mountain, Jorge Elbrecht, POND, Evolfo, Cola Boyy, moa moa and more, Jangle Pop from Ducks Ltd. and more, Psychedelic Rock from Acid Dad and Matt Berry (multi-talented actor and musician from What We Do in the Shadows), and Dream Pop from the likes of Sasha and the Valentines, Boyish, Plant Parlor, Maple Glider, and Luna Li. Of course there are plenty of artists local here in Atlanta, many of whom have been making their mark well outside the city limits including Faye Webster, Dinner Time, Small Reactions, Mattiel, Lunar Vacation, Curtis Harding and of course, Manchester Orchestra. While the theme at OE is always in hopes that listeners will find something new, there are plenty of well known indie artists sprinkled throughout the playlist including St. Vincent, Lucy Dacus, Real Estate (and Real Estate member Alex Bleeker), Wolf Alice, Still Woozy, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, CHVRCHES, etc.
And yes, it’s all about those lazy pool days, but it’s not all chill. There’s plenty to rev up those engines on a hot summer day like illuminati hotties’ “Pool Hopping”, CLAVVS’ “Stay Together”, Jungle’s “Keep Moving” and songs like the funky folk opera from The Artisanals on “Plant the Seed”. Of course you can’t forget perhaps our Song of the Summer of 2021, the debut single from UK’s Wet Leg, “Chaise Longue”. Could there be a more perfect song for this playlist, or rather this summer?
