Wednesday, September 7th The Masquerade on 695 North Avenue was still in operation, and it was the temporary home for Rivergazer, Japanese Breakfast, and Porches.
RIVERGAZER
Kevin Farrant (keyboard), and bandmate Ian Romer (guitar) took to the stage to start off the night with a solid set of electronic DIY style pop songs. The New York native who was wearing a South Korean flag hat, white reeboks, and his ONLY4U tee shirt said in the middle of the set, “If Kanye can do it, so can I”, pointing at his minimalistic style t-shirt. Rivergazer’s set was the perfect introduction to what was to come later that night.
JAPANESE BREAKFAST
The second act to grace the stage on Wednesday night was Philadelphia’s Japanese Breakfast. In 2016, the Michelle Zauner led act released Psychopomp on Yellow K Records. The set was brilliant, and the energy that Michelle brought to the stage could not possibly be missed. The band played a wide variety of songs from their previous albums, and also covered a Cranberries song, “Who”.
PORCHES
Anticipation was growing in Purgatory of the Masquerade after Japanese Breakfast left the stage. Aaron Maine and company graced the stage with their blissful synth-pop sounds. The execution of the songs flowed so perfectly, and before the audience knew it, the act was nearing the end of their setlist. Aaron said, “This is the point where we act like were going off the stage, and then come back for three more songs”. Instead of doing that the band rolled into their remaining songs and left the entire audience in awe at the end of the night.
