Have you seen Surf Curse live yet? If not, you should put them on the top of your list – seriously. There’s nothing better than their cathartic, feel-good indie, and their ability to rile up a crowd with light banter and surf-rock playfulness. The LA-based, Reno-bred duo comprised of Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck, tour with a live band and stopped by Houston’s White Oak Music Hall on a school night.
Their shows are dubbed a “rite of passage” for the southwestern youth. Though, I’m sure each of their shows has a sizeable teenage turn-out wherever they go. Rattigan, who drums and sings, jokingly thanked everyone for coming out on a Monday night: “I know you have work, and homework, and school.”
Mondays are the least rage-y night of the week, especially on a long-weekend when Tuesday becomes your Monday. But, the show was a must-see for those in need of a lite-mosh and crowd surf. The band hasn’t played Houston since 2017.
Rattigan and Rubeck are touring their latest album, Heaven Surrounds You, which came out in September last year. It’s a dazzling third follow-up to Nothing Yet and Buds. Surf Curse played quite a few songs from their new release, including “River’s Edge,” “Maps to the Stars,” and “Midnight Cowboy,” and then rounded off their set with “Freaks” and “Disco” back-to-back. Rattigan got a bandmate to take over on drums so that he could freely sing “Disco” from the crowd. It was their “last song,” but it left everyone wanting more.
