Well here we are, July 4th has passed, it’s hot as Hades out, and we may have just found our song of the Summer for 2019 to help us power on through with the release of The Minks new single “I’m Okay”. Today, we are pumped to exclusively premiere the corresponding video for the new single as we follow along on the journey to being okay. So crank up the volume and let’s go:
If you aren’t familiar with The Minks yet, it’s time to get to know the Nashville-based band as they prep the release of their debut full length album, Light & Sweet, set to be released September 20th via Cafe Rooster Records. The Minks began cutting their teeth in the underground Nashville rock scene a few years ago when frontwoman Nikki Barber picked up and moved to the Music City to pursue her rock ‘n’ roll dreams. With a few EPs and singles released over the last few years, plus a ton of live shows, the buzz that began within the city limits has expanded beyond as the band is ready to fully unleash who The Minks are to the world.
The Minks describe themselves as a “psychedelic-bloos” band, aptly describing their brand of rock ‘n’ roll that’s steeped in everything from psych, blues, garage rock, jangle pop, country, and more for a sound that’s retro, and certainly needed in 2019.
The Minks released the first single in May, “J. Walker Blues“, giving us the first taste of their debut album. This week they released “I’m Okay”, cementing themselves as a need to know band. The song itself is an upbeat reminder to not let life get you down, and if you are in that funk feeling blue, The Minks will have your feet stomping and singing along as Nikki Barber decrees “Sometimes I get to feeling blue, you know I’m gonna make it through, cause I’m okay, I’m alright, oh I’m feeling just groovy.”
Barber told us “I’m Okay is all about finding the silver linings. It’s an ode to finding what passions and people fuel you, and giving them power, instead of the darkness.”
The new video for “I’m Okay” is a perfect compliment to the song. Said Barber: “The video stars Justin Pellecchia and was shot and edited by me. It’s all about one man’s journey to find his inner child, with a little help from a bizarre suitcase. It was filmed around key spots of Nashville where one might go to discover wonder (ex. Dragon Park, Centennial Park, and even a carnival). We hope it brings people as much joy as it gave us to make.” And all it takes is to crank that sound and dance it out.
Artfully shot with a grainy retro film feel, the video opens with John (Justin Pellecchia) working out his demons with some striking moves in a cape before his sister, Nikki, appears ready to read a book. Nikki, confused by what he is doing, asks John what the hell is going on with him? John doesn’t answer, instead all he does is turn up the sound, and suddenly we are all just feeling groovy. John makes his way around Nashville following signs that lead him to each stop dancing around the city. Eventually John lands on a bridge where the song goes into a psychedelic freak out as he releases those demons though some air guitar. Suddenly John’s feeling pretty good, and the video continues following him as he enjoys the city’s sights and sounds.
All it took was to crank up that sound, and to dance it all out with some rock ‘n’ roll for John to get out of the darkness. A life lesson we can all take away from The Minks on our own path to kicking the blues and feeling okay this summer. So what are you waiting for?
