After the successful release of their single “Nothing At All” in late 2016 on a single-compilation release featuring Trash Panda’s viral hit “Giuseppe”, The Pussywillows are giving us a new piece of their sexy, Tarantino-feminism sound. Since the release, the supergroup have been delivering Atlanta their live set dripping in harmonies that weave among one another seamlessly, leaving listeners with ear candy after every show and an intense desire to put their music on repeat. We are excited to premiere their newest single, “Too Bad”, and the trippy, party-packed music video.
The Pussywillows, consisting of Hannah Zale (ZALE) and Carly Gibson, are perfect harmony in motion. They are yin and yang to one another. What makes them so interesting is that on their own, Zale and Gibson are both uniquely fierce women with their own power, but together, they demand your attention. You can’t look away. They are soul sisters completing each other, highlighting and emphasizing the best of their musical skills together. This has led to a unique sound and aesthetic entirely their own; imagine First Aid Kit and Heart had a baby raised by Grace Potter and Jack White.
While “Nothing At All” was dripping in rock and a little bit of despair and anger, “Too Bad” is a rocking anthem for the 21st century woman. It echoes a sentiment of breaking free from the judgement of what is good or bad and that battle with releasing your inner desires. The lyrics emphasize a desire to be one’s self, to embrace our natural sexuality, our natural being. The song itself is pure fun. A slower intro speeds along into a groove that keeps you moving until the end. The music video, directed by Alphonso Whitfield, is a nostalgic VHS-style throwback with psychedelia blasting throughout. “We wanted it to feel nostalgic, like you found an old, homemade VHS and got a player from Goodwill just to see what was on it” says Hannah Zale, “and we wanted it to be a party so we threw one.”
We are all animals and The Pussywillows remind us that even if your friends think it’s trouble, sometimes you just gotta be bad. Check out the premiere of “Too Bad”: ~ Written by Kara Hammond
