Oakland-based Toro Y Moi returned to Atlanta for a sold out show at Variety Playhouse on Friday, fresh off the recent announcement of a new album, Outer Peace, due out January 18th via Carpark Records.
Minneapolis’ Dizzy Fae has been the opener for Toro Y Moi this tour and was there to get the packed crowd ready for the headliner again in Atlanta. The 20 year old R&B singer proved to be the perfect opener for the eclectic crowd there to see Chaz Bear, able to glide around the indie world with a mixture of Synth Pop, R&B and Soul. In Dizzy Fae’s young career, she has already toured with the likes of Lizzo, Jorja Smith, and Empress Of; and with the release of her Free Form Mixtape earlier this year, it’s clear Dizzy Fae is the future of pop music. Dizzy Fae played a lively set at Variety Playhouse with a lot of crowd interaction and dancing, leaving the crowd mezmerized as she bounced around stage.
With Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bear originally from Columbia, SC, they’ve got plenty of fans around the southeast and Atlanta has always been a hype market for the band. The sold out crowd was ready to dance the night away as soon as Toro Y Moi took the stage as a 4 piece band. Chaz Bear, one of the founding fathers of chillwave, has ventured further into the dance music world over the last few albums, enabling setlists that are both lively and entrancing. The third song of the set, Toro Y Moi played the first single off the upcoming new album, “Freelance”, a song that infuses house and funk alongside Chaz’s smooth vocals and buoyant beats, creating a dance party down in the pit of Variety Playhouse. The rest of the set included a few new songs off the upcoming album, and hits such as “Girl Like You” and “Say That”. The band never quit playing, never did the fake leave for an encore, instead choosing to go hard straight through until late Friday night. The crowd never took a break either, showing their appreciation as they cheered Toro Y Moi until the lights were finally cut on in old theater. Chaz was all smiles all night long, and so was the Atlanta crowd.
