Chicago-based indie rock band Beach Bunny came through Atlanta on Tuesday, November 16th at Variety Playhouse to a sold out crowd ready to bounce.

What started as a solo project in 2015 by Lili Trifilio, the now four piece band, Beach Bunny came to Atlanta with a ton of buzz and even got bumped to larger venue in Variety Playhouse, and subsequently sold the new venue out again. After releasing a few EPs over the years which got the early hype started, Beach Bunny released their full length debut album on Mom + Pop Music in February on 2020. Now the band has amassed millions of world wide streams (6+ million monthly listeners on Spotify) and built a fanbase that’s ready to revel in these songs with the band live on the road. Sadly, Beach Bunny didn’t get the full tour behind the debut with everything shutting down in March. So here we are over a year later, Beach Bunny is on a massive US tour (mostly sold out) with Europe coming in early 2022, and now a just announced new US tour in 2022 (Beach Bunny will be back in Atlanta at an even bigger venue The Eastern on May 22, 2022, so if you missed this show, hop on those tickets quick). The excitement is clearly still there, maybe even built up more, so yeah, things are looking pretty good. In fact, I imagine it’s been quite the ride for Lili and the band….

The show in Atlanta at Variety Playhouse started pretty hype as the crowd piled in with Ky Voss opening, and Miloe pumping up the crowd right before Beach Bunny came on. Both clearly earned some new fans with the Minnesota indie rocker Miloe showing lots of promise, getting the crowd dancing early.

By the time Beach Bunny came out, the crowd was ready, and so was the band, just maybe not in their usual way. Lili came out stating that it had been a crappy day, and that she needed this. There were a few tears there at the beginning and later in the set as all the lights focused on Lili singing an emotional song. It’s kind of the beauty of Beach Bunny really.

The band’s sound lives in a grungy pop punk realm that’s upbeat and gets the crowd moving. They’ve taken pieces of 90’s alt-rock and modernized it to 2021. The lyrics are so much right now though. They are real, real emotions, real things experienced by the songwriter everyday that speaks directly to many of us out their in the audience. We relate. It’s hard not to. And that’s why this band has hit such a chord.

And that’s exactly why it’s okay to get emotional. We get it. We are right there with you. There’s no crying in punk right? Shoot, this isn’t the 1970’s, we don’t need to prove our toughness. Being real is tough, and that’s exactly who Lili Trifilio and Beach Bunny are. And as an audience, it just connects us further.

So as Beach Bunny cracked out 2-3 minutes of energy burst after energy burst, the Atlanta crowd danced and sang right alongside the band, releasing all the tension of a crazy last couple of years. Don’t miss Beach Bunny on their upcoming tours.
