The fireworks kicked off a night early in Atlanta on July 3rd when the East Atlanta dive bar 529 hosted the tropical vibes of Fantasy Guys, Video Age, Karaoke, and Sad Fish.
The Tuesday night showed kicked off with some local favorites, the Brazilian surf rock of Sad Fish, and psychedelic pop quartet Karaoke. The packed out show featured only one band on the bill not local to Atlanta, Video Age out of New Orleans out supporting their sophomore album, Pop Therapy, released June 15th via Inflated Records.
Video Age is a four piece band that features songwriters Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli. The band uses vintage synthesizers to create nostalgic 80’s synth-pop that had the crowd at 529 grooving along to their buoyant tunes. Video Age’s retro futuristic vibes are the ideal soundtrack to a hot summer night and a perfect addition to the already strong lineup on this night.
The headliner for the evening was one of our favorite Atlanta bands, Fantasy Guys, who released their latest EP Cruisin’ Around Respectin’ Babes in 2017. After the success of their 2015 EP and 2016 debut album On Poppy Island, Fantasy Guys finally dropped their latest EP in November, showing that no matter the time of year, this band will bring you straight to a tropical island. The band uses everything from luminous guitar, to retro synths and vibraphone to create sensual, almost video game-esc soundscapes that were created within the pools of Atlanta while dreaming of palms trees and white sand. Their latest EP goes even further into the sensual aspect of their music, creating a sound that is both sexy as hell and will have you dancing right along. Looking around the room at 529 during Fantasy Guys set, like anytime you see them live, the band had the hips swaying, in unison with the band, and grooving late into the night.
There’s never a wrong time to go to a Fantasy Guys live show, but this stacked lineup at 529 made for a memorable pre-fireworks evening. Check out photos from the show by Mike Gerry below:
