JUST LISTEN: Amen Dunes “Blue Rose”

The Deets:

Who: Amen Dunes
Song: “Blue Rose”
Appears On: Amen Dunes will release his fifth album, Freedom, on March 30th via Sacred Bones. “Blue Rose” is the second single.
Current Location: Brooklyn
Info: Amen Dunes (aka the project of New York-based Damon McMahon) will release his fifth album, Freedom, on March 30th via Sacred Bones. On the “exquisitely flowing structure and New Wave momentum” of lead single “Miki Dora,” “McMahon invites you to ‘roll around with me’ and the rest of the world seems to dissolve. His voice rings with gorgeous desperation, but the music never loses its cool” (Pitchfork). Now he shares the album’s second single, “Blue Rose.”

If Freedom as a whole is a relinquishing of the various definitions of self, and the self in ‘Miki Dora’ was that of a mythical heroic maleness, ‘Blue Rose’ is the exploration of its origins in the struggle between a young man and his father.

The song is a teenage clarion call born from McMahon’s growing up with an unpredictable father, his fighting back with music, drugs and fantasy, and his eventual escape from it all via one of the many identities, that of a musician, that Freedom ultimately works to unravel.

The album opener,Blue Rose’ introduces McMahon in the character of Amen Dunes, a la Sgt. Pepper, as Freedom’s musical narrator.
Comments: Based on the first two singles from the upcoming album, Freedom, this is shaping up to be one of Amen Dunes best records yet, a songwriter that’s always been critically acclaimed, yet has never fully got the due he deserves. There’s something about the poignant lyrics that McMahon has always been able to convey, and “Blue Rose” is another to add to the list. Add in the signature drawl, and relaxed, atmospheric sound, “Blue Rose” is a unique composition that quickly drops you into McMahon’s world, showing a restraint in the song that feels like it’s going to go off at any moment, but just holds back to the point that you a vested, and only wanting more.
