Earlier this year, prolific songwriting sister duo Lily & Madeleine released their third album, Keep It Together via New West Records. The Indiana based sisters are still quite young, Lily, 19, and Madeleine, 21, but have already become well known for their whimsical harmonies. On their latest album though, the young sisters have taken a step forward, adding more layers to their folks songs, a beautifully produced record full of more textures and a pop sheen that really makes the duo shine bright.
Tonight, Lily & Madeleine are coming through our hometown of Atlanta to play Terminal West with Brett Dennen. We couldn’t pass up the chance to ask the sisters before their show to take over this week’s Monomania Playlist with the songs that they are currently listening to on repeat. Check out what Lily & Madeleine picked for this week’s playlist and their thoughts on each song; don’t miss the chance to catch them on tour now. Dates below.
Madeleine’s Picks:
1. “Say It Right” by Nelly Furtado
This song was released in 2006 but it’s such a timeless jam! Of course Timbaland produced it. I love all the vocal parts and the driving beat.
2. “The Calculation” by Regina Spektor
This song is just so bouncy and fun. I love the imagery of the lyrics.
3. “15 Step” by Radiohead
This is the first Radiohead song I ever heard. I was in middle school at the time and surrounded by pop music on the radio, on TV, in movies. This song kind of changed my life. It was unlike anything I’d heard and I totally fell in love with Radiohead.
4. “Caribbean Blue” by Enya
Lily and I would blast this song and dance around when we were little. I think Enya helped me discover my love of harmony. This song especially has so many harmony parts and different melodies that weave in and out.
5. “Pink Moon” by Nick Drake
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It reminds me of being a little kid and it’s just so beautiful and haunting. Also I’m legit the best at mishearing lyrics so I always thought the line “Saw it written and I saw it say, Pink moon is on its way” was “Saw it written on a soy sauce.”
Lily’s Picks:
6. “Glamorous” by Fergie
Madge and I still jam out to this song. It has an awesome chill vibe to it and reminds me of spring break trips when we were little.
7. “I Wish It Would Rain” by The Temptations
I love soulful songs like this and most Motown music. The delivery of the vocals is somehow both emotional and silly.
8. “Drama (ft.Drake)” by Roy Woods
This song is so chill and I love the key change at the end. I used to listen to it on the bus to class like everyday during my one semester at college.
9. “what kind of love” by Childish Gambino
I love Childish Gambino and I love how this song doesn’t really fit into any genre of music. It’s like singer/songwriter/rap/R&B and the lyrics are beautiful and simple.
10. “Like That” by JoJo
Madge and I have always adored JoJo since she came out like 10 years ago. I feel like this song off her second album was way ahead of its time!
