Looking at Friday’s new releases for this New Music Tuesday 2-16, this week’s list is shorter than last week, but there’s still plenty of albums worth your ears this week.
You can’t start without the new Kanye West album, one of the biggest releases of the year. So if you’re on TIDAL or are one of the millions that have pirated the new album, well then this is probably a pretty big week. Reviews are coming in all over the place with wide praise and interesting quips about the album.
Our top pick this week is former Pedro the Lion collaborator TW Walsh‘s fifth solo album, Fruitless Research. Walsh really hits the grooves in this one. Check out our interview with TW Walsh here.
Right there with TW are two debut albums from Matthew Logan Vasquez and James Supercave. Vasquez, the Delta Spirit frontman, releases his first solo album (everything is peachy with Delta Spirit with new music to come) where his familiar snarl still immediately fills your ears. But on his solo record, Vasquez takes cues from the 70’s with an album full of great guitar riffs different from what you’d hear on a DS album. James Supercave is the psych pop project of Los Angeles’ Joaquin Pastor, whose been building hype leading up to the debut album for a while.
Other new releases we are particularly excited for this week include Canadian star Basia Bulat‘s new album, Good Advice, produced by Jim James, and two Atlanta releases: Peter Webb‘s Liminal Space (2/9) and MammaBear‘s Hell Cat EP (2/15). Webb, a member of esteemed experimental Atlanta bands Faun and a Pan Flute and Hello Ocho, finds his own voice on his first solo release, and seems like a future star as a singer/songwriter. MammaBear’s 3 song EP is a great intro into a rock and roll band that seem to have an affinity for British rock, while still taking something from the local garage rock scene, leaving you only wanting more.
