S.G. Goodman came through Atlanta on Wednesday night at The EARL, selling out her first Atlanta headlining show alongside local favorite Rose Hotel.
Atlanta’s own Rose Hotel opened up the show, packing the house out early to catch new Rose Hotel songs. Jordan Reynolds, aka, Rose Hotel came out with a minimalist setup, with some of her Neighbor Lady bandmates adding to the songs with backup vocals, harmony, and ambience. It was mostly Jordan, her songs, and guitar though. Honestly, the Rose Hotel set blew my mind, and clearly it was more than just me. The crowd was really attentive for an opening set, which is a testament to Rose Hotel who commanded their attention. I don’t know when the new Rose Hotel album will drop, but based on this set, you can go ahead and slap that one on the most anticipated new albums list.
S.G. Goodman was up next with a sold out crowd primed and ready. Excitement was in the air. I’ve never seen S.G. Goodman before, so I really didn’t know what was in store. What I knew was:
A. I was pumped.
B. I really really loved her Jim James co-produced debut album in 2020. But perhaps with everything going on with the pandemic, the album didn’t fully get the attention it deserved, though their was plenty of critical love.
C. She also released a really good sophomore album last year, Teeth Marks.
D. This Western Kentucky country girl is a great songwriter, with everything from rock to haunting folk songs.
What I didn’t know? I had no idea I was walking into a straight up bona fide rock ‘n’ roll concert. I might as well have been at a My Morning Jacket concert, it was that level. The drummer might as well had been Patrick Hallahan’s son, and guitarist, Rich Ruth, was insane adding euphoric nuisances to each song. On top of S.G. Goodman’s songs, this was a next level set. The only thing left to do at the end of the night was to decide on which of her albums should I buy on vinyl?
