Nikki & the Phantom Callers released their debut seven inch single with a warm Summer show in the East Atlanta Village on Friday. The Atlanta band brought their fresh and catchy southern gothic-rock to a friendly hometown audience at 529. Joining the band were several up and coming local bands that every Atlantan should know: Rod Hamdallah, Roadkill Debutante, and Pine & Tolliver.

The newly renovated 529 in the East Atlanta Village was the perfect spot for Nikki & the Phantom Callers’ seven inch release show. The venue’s recent expansion gave plenty of space to hold a dancing crowd, while the opening bands brought some of the best Atlanta indie music, and the wall with a collection of Georgia vinyl releases had space to add the newest Atlanta seven inch single.

Opening the ceremonies were a group of very talented local bands to watch out for. The Pine & Tolliver duo performed a charming acoustic set, Roadkill Debutante showed their talent with a set of twangy rock and roll tunes, and Rod Hamdallah slayed with his guitar-driven garage rock.

Frontwoman Nikki Speake is no stranger to the East Atlanta stages. After all, she is one third of the eclectic rock band Midnight Larks and the bassist of the indie rock group, Shantih Shantih. Originally from Alabama, it made sense for Nikki to start her own band with southern rock influences. But the Phantom Callers’ music is no average country band. Their unique style gives enough space for dark overtones, gothic lyrics, and haunting sounds. The songs from their new single What the Daughter Does, The Mother Did are proof of that.

Nikki & the Phantom Callers quickly got their hometown crowd dancing to their new tracks. The highlight of the night was “Prodigal Daughter”, a lovely duet with bassist and Shantih Shantih bandmate, Anna Kramer. Nikki and Anna looked very comfortable playing together, effortlessly singing the amazing melodies of a song that will surely get stuck in your head after you listen to it. Nikki & the Phantom Callers have just released their first single into the world, and it’s clear this is only the beginning with plenty more to look forward to.
