Saturday night in Brooklyn brought together a night of psychedelic, experimental, and grungy sounds. Vacationer, Sego, and Malik were all playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
First, it all started with Malik Rahmaan— an upcoming producer who is creating beats under the stage name “Malik”. Malik was born and raised in Louisiana and later traveling the world he found himself musically. Tonight, he rotated both modern and classic mashups. From Kendrick Lamar to J Dilla, the Brooklyn DJ started the dancing.
Transitioning to a much more guitar-driven sound, the Utah brothers, Sego, took the stage. “Too Bad You Don’t” was the first song of the setlist. The best way to describe the sound of Sego is hazy with an explosive kick. If you’re looking for a good intro to the band check out “Whatever Forever“. Brilliancy was coming from every song and the quick, upbeat sound found executing a shiftless rhythm and putting the audience in a trance.
Ending the night was Vacationer. Known for their hits such as “Good as New”, the band was ready to prove there was much more than a few hit singles. The Philadelphia band’s newest album, Mindset, was released on June 22nd via Downtown Records. The lead singer, Kenny Vasoli, said “I’m sure you’re wondering if this will be mellow. I’ll answer that now, mellow and a little bit of sad mellow”. Bouncing around with their older material, the band found space to add their new material. Vacationer ended the night with a dedication to all of the puppy dogs in the city. As the clock ticked towards midnight, the band launched into “Good as New” and capped off the night in Brooklyn.
The night at Williamsburg Music Hall was the perfect way to kick off a summer weekend. Vacationer and Sego continue their tour moving up north.
