The hottest ticket in Bushwick this past week was to see Viagra Boys play Elsewhere three nights in a row. Helmed by Sebastian Murphy’s dark, absurd, sexy, and crude humor, the Swedish band has captured the zeitgeist of the post-pandemic world, especially in America. The tour cheekily titled “Shrimp City Beach 1993 Reunion” (after an “Ain’t No Thief” lyric) is sold out, and we were treated to their second night in Brooklyn.

Viagra Boys walked on stage to sultry entrance music and were greeted with phones in the air for their opening song, “Ain’t No Thief,” from their latest album, Cave World. Murphy’s ramblings between songs contribute to the Viagra Boys’ lore. Between “Baby Criminal” and “Slow Learner,” he explained how his love of drugs landed him in Sweden. Then, he told us a Breaking Bad-type story on how he met his bandmates at school. Highlights from the night include Murphy crooning “Creepy Crawlers” from the ground, deep-cut “Liquids,” and the 10-minute crowd-pleaser “Shrimp Shack.” They encored with Planet of the Apes style “Return to Monke” and capped off the night with “Worms.” The only downside to a Viagra Boys show is their mosh pit, but otherwise getting to see the band in short-shorts, rambling around is worth-while and dance-worthy.
