VIDEO PREMIERE: Delorean Gray “Syndicate”

In March, Atlanta-based Delorean Gray released their shimmering sophomore LP, Otaku Punk, a new wave influenced, sci-fi journey. Today we are happy to premiere the exotic, 80’s inspired video and perfect compliment for the latest single off the album, “Syndicate”.

Delorean Gray began as a side project for Jacob Chisenhall, who was the frontman of Atlanta-based Dream Pop band Fake Flowers. Chisenhall released his debut mixtape, Kimera Sequence_1: Hokkaido Overwash as Delorean Gray in 2016 as a way of exploring influences outside of what Fake Flowers was becoming known for. Just as the band seemed to be gaining more and more steam though, the band ended while sitting on unreleased material and leaving Chisenhall with his solo outfit, Delorean Gray.

Jacob Chisenhall put all of his creativity into really exploring Delorean Gray, releasing now two albums in just over a year, including the more bossa nova/tropicalia inspired debut LP, Star Tropics. Joined now by frequent collaborator Freeman Leverett and recent addition Jason Bronson, Delorean Gray has become a fully realized project on the latest album that channels influences of everything from new wave, to R&B, and a little metal, seemingly taking the best from his former band and first two releases to make an album full of dreamy soundscapes utilizing old school synth gear.

While the new album itself has an overall glittery sheen to it, the underlying tones in the sci-fi world of Otaku Punk explores the lonely relationship of a world of technology and the associated downfalls which is never more evident than on “Syndicate”. The video, directed by Stephen Wilkins, immediately takes you to a cheesy, 80’s inspired futuristic movie with neon lights, flashing screens, Enterprise Starship like uniforms and a galactic lover. The interstellar video has a lonely romanticism to it, perfectly complimenting the song itself, and leaving Chisenhall’s character DeLorean dreaming of the possibilities of a world where the cord is cut. The apathetic feeling is matched with inspiration and hope to leave the confines, and break free from the desolate and mad world.

Said Chisenhall about the inspiration for the video: “The video was inspired by my obsession with both Star Trek and Synthesizers. It’s a very loose narrative about my character DeLorean crafting a robotic lover, but realizing that it’s a vain and vapid mission, and “cutting the cable” on both her and our relationship.”

“Our friend and very talented artist Aron Atrip has a modular synth set up in The Bakery with multiple oscilloscopes, so it’s made a lovely visual depiction of a mad scientist lab where one might craft a synthetic lover”.
