Geese set the chilly weekend ablaze as they took to the stage for their highly anticipated two-night run at Mercury Lounge and their inaugural Geesefest. Not having played a show since August, the young New York natives delivered an explosive performance of new songs and first album favorites, leaving the sold-out crowd at Mercury Lounge wanting more.
Just shy of a month ago, the band dropped “Cowboy Nudes” – the first hint of new music being on the way since their buzzy debut album Projector. After the Mercury Lounge shows, we can confirm there is new music (lots of it), and it’s a warm departure from their angular post-punk debut. Sophomore albums are always tricky, and we can already sense that a new era is here for the New Yorkers–one that blends an almost familiar retro sound with something super modern, though it feels entirely like Geese. The through line is singer Cameron Winter’s voice, deep with the ability to hit a falsetto, Max Bassin’s ready to go attitude on drums, interplay between Gus Green and Foster Hudson’s guitars, and Dominic DiGesu’s driving bass.
Curated by Geese, Saturday’s lineup featured fellow New York City bands you should know about, Been Stellar and Godcaster. Been Stellar, at home on the Lower East Side scene, played a meditative set, including recent singles “Manhattan Youth,” “Ohm,” and “Kids 1995,” and we’re excited to see where the next year takes them. Though we only caught the tail-end of Godcaster’s performance, we’ve heard good things by word-of-mouth excitement and look forward to catching them play another time.
