The Weekly – Spotify Playlist – 2/4/19

New Year, New Playlist. We try to keep up with all the latest indie singles released everyday on our Spotify playlist, the daily updated OE: Buzzworthy New Indie Singles, for an easy way to find that new new music. That can be hard to keep up with for even the crazed new music fan. Perhaps though, you just are looking for some strong recommendations in a shorter form. So for the new year, we will pair it down to at most 10 songs that we are really digging from the prior week’s newly released singles (Monday-Sunday) on our new Spotify playlist – The Weekly.

It was another tough week to narrow down the choices to 10 songs when last week brought new releases from the likes of Beach Slang, Interpol, White Denim, The Mountain Goats, Soccer Mommy, Cage The Elephant, Lucy Dacus, Cass McCombs, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and so many more. There was even the digital release of the Theophilus London / Tame Impala collab, “Whiplash”. Plus there is the unheard Empire Of The Sun single “Chrysalis”, being released for the 10th anniversary reissue on vinyl of the Aussie’s certified platinum debut Walking On A Dream.

But the songs we kept coming back to this week overall includes more of the under the radar new releases besides Andrew Bird, Avey Tare, and Girlpool to an extent (their new album What Chaos Is Imaginary dropped Friday and is fantastic). There are few stellar local releases from indie pop duo CLAVVS (now based in Brooklyn), the experiment psych journey from Pinkest, and some killer hooks from Athens-based Wanderwild. Add in a groovy rocker from Clemson, South Carolina upstarts Monsoon Room, which will just put you in a lighter mood, and it was a pretty dang good week in the Southeast. There is also the first single from Jo Schornikow’s upcoming official debut album, the mesmerizing and soothing “Incomplete”. (sidenote: Jo is apparently Phopshorescent’s Matthew Houck’s longtime partner and has played with the band amongst others). To get your groove going further, there is also the electro pop from LEISURE’s “Easy Way Out” and the slow burning R&B on Omar Apollo’s tender new ballad “Trouble”. All in all, another strong week of new singles in 2019.

As always, leave in our comments here or on socials with your recs from last week’s releases, any that we missed, gripes, comments on how much you hate the picks, or just general life changing moments experienced through a new tune. Heck even if you think it’s all wrong, subscribe to the playlist to see if we do better next week. Update with all new songs, coming each Monday. With love, it’s The Weekly:
