Friday night, the Bowery Ballroom brought a sold-out crowd to see Petal, Camp Cope, and Sidney Gish. Petal, the Kiley Lotz fronted project, is touring their new album Magic Gone for the first time in New York and Australian newcomers Camp Cope looked to unravel a ton of new material.

Singer/songwriter Sidney Gish started opened at the Bowery Ballroom on Friday night. The Boston born musician started her night off by playing a song from her 2017 album, No Dogs Allowed. The pace continued through the rest of the set. Gish relied heavily on looping her guitars to build momentum into each song. “Presumably Dead Arm” capped off the end of Sidney’s set.

Shortly after Gish exited, the Pennsylvanian based band, PETAL, opened with a soft approach and worked their way into more upbeat moments. During the middle of the set, the lead singer Kiley Lotz examined the audience and sat alone with their keyboard. Shortly after acknowledging that Petal has performed at the venue before, Lotz broke into an emotionally fueled rendition of “Silver Springs” by Stevie Nicks. Kiley discussed how being queer, coming out, and psychological battles fueled the material for Magic Gone, the bands most recent album (June 15th via Run For Cover Records). The performance was a fantastic way to introduce Camp Cope.

Australians Camp Cope, took the stage next. The three-piece band was compromised by three women — Georgia MacDonald, Kelley Hellmrich, and Sarah Thompson. Georgia immediately took a picture of the audience telling them that “her mother wouldn’t believe she’s playing a sold out show in NYC”. After the opening song, the band entered into “The Face of God”, a song about sexual misconduct. MacDonald exclaimed that it is important that all men in the audience need to talk to one another of how to stop sexual assault. That was the theme of the rest of the set, Camp Cope proving that they deserve the same treatment as other musicians in the industry (most being men). The set concluded right near midnight with the band playing “The Opener”.

It was a sold-out Bowery Ballroom crowd that experienced the wonders of Camp Cope, PETAL, and Sydney Gish. The night brought together the audience into emotional realms and touched on subjects that modern society struggles with. The show was the second to last show of the tour, but be on the lookout for future dates.
